This Special Membership Meeting was called by the membership at our June Membership Meeting for three reasons:
- To hold an election to fill the 7 vacant spots for General Member on the Steering Committee, following our membership resolution
- Following our approved resolution creating a class struggle publication, proposals meeting the following criteria were submitted for eligible business: “resolutions relating to the publication or its content, including the consideration of Membership-approved Positions”
- To complete business we didn’t get to at the June membership meeting
An election for the Steering Committee vacancies was held, following our newly-revised Bylaws, and seven members were elected: Margie Thornton, Jennifer Jones, Sophia Gurulé, Jean Duchemin, Dave Park, Joseph Loftus, and Jeremy Bunyaner. Congratulations to our new SC members!
The Steering Committee gave a report on the progress of our Membership Pledge, which is used by UAWD supporters to formally become members, affirming our new UAWD Member Platform and UAWD Member Participation Commitments. The breakdown of our membership at the time of the meeting was split almost evenly between manufacturing shops and technical office and professional (TOP) shops, with slightly more manufacturing workers represented.
Next, members considered a consent agenda, containing all motions that received at least 95% support in our pre-meeting membership poll. Two resolutions were placed on the consent agenda, which was adopted:
Next was discussion on the resolutions that were not on the consent agenda. Each was adopted, after being debated and voted on in the following order:
Lastly, items were presented for discussion as Old and New business:
- Frank Hammer shared a tribute to and letter of solidarity for ASOTRECOL
- Judy Wraight reported on a meeting the Steering Committee had with Fritz Hofmann from the 3rd International Automotive Workers Conference, after the UAWD Steering Committee signed on to endorse the conference
- Jeremy Bunyaner shared an update on the Local 2325 sectoral strike of legal services workers in New York City
Thank you to everyone who joined the Membership Meeting!
