Resolution: Clarifying Policies Governing UAWD’s Online Communication Spaces

This resolution was passed at the Winter Membership Meeting via Zoom on January 25, 2026.

WHEREAS, UAWD’s current policy, based on the June 2024 resolution, Streamline the UAWD WhatsApp Delegate Chat, states that our organization’s main group chat is exclusively for members of UAWD, excluding UAWD supporters seeking to learn about our movement;

WHEREAS, our shared communication spaces are major avenues for member-to-member political education, and establishing basic points of unity from all participants ensures these spaces enable conversation, political disagreement & development, and strategic analysis;

WHEREAS, there is currently no required aspect of the dues-paying form for supporters and members that affirms support for UAWD’s existence and our work to develop a UAW rooted in class struggle built from the shop floor;

THEREFORE, be it resolved that:

  1. The UAWD General Chat on WhatsApp shall only include UAWD members and supporters in good standing. The resolution, Streamline the UAWD WhatsApp Delegate Chat, shall be amended in the following ways:
    1. Section 3: “Active UAWD members and supporters in good standing who wish to join shall be added upon request.
    2. Section 5: “As long as they follow the guidelines, all UAWD members and supporters shall have the right to express themselves freely and openly in the chat …”
  2. Unless stated otherwise, the rules for the UAWD General Chat shall apply to all other official UAWD communication spaces representing other aspects of UAWD’s organization, including committees, geographical affiliation, or Regional and Local Chapters.
  3. The UAWD Slack shall only include UAWD members in good standing and UAWD supporters in good standing who have signed the UAWD Membership Pledge.
  4. The following rules shall be used for regular updating of communications spaces:
    1. The Recording Secretary, with the assistance of the Membership Development Committee, is responsible for cross-referencing communication spaces with UAWD’s master database at least once per month.
    2. If a UAWD member or supporter has lapsed in their dues and are no longer in good standing, they will be contacted to renew their dues. If they have not done so within 7 days, they will be removed from any communication space they are a part of. This process will be initiated within the week after this motion passes.
  5. The following text be added as a checkbox to our “Join Us” form for supporter and member fees, which is hosted here:
    1. “By completing this form, I understand that I am becoming a “UAWD supporter,” and I affirm support for UAWD’s continued work and mission: “UAWD is a grassroots movement of rank-and-file UAW members, united in our vision of class struggle unionism and fighting to build a militant, democratic UAW that is run by the UAW membership.”
