WHEREAS, UAWD led the campaign to win One Member One Vote (1M1V) through a membership referendum in 2021;
WHEREAS, UAW Member Action has put forward “Resolution to Protect UAW Members’ Right to Vote Directly in International Officer Elections,” which would amend the UAW Constitution to require a membership referendum before undoing One Member One Vote for International Executive Board officers;
WHEREAS, while this amendment would make it harder to roll back 1M1V, it does not respond to any current threat to 1M1V;
WHEREAS, this narrow reform only pertains to 1M1V and doesn’t give the UAW membership the broader ability to make decisions democratically through a referendum, maintaining the broader top-down nature of the Constitutional Convention system, nor does it expand member democracy into the various areas where it is lacking, which is a necessary component of building a class struggle union;
THEREFORE, be it resolved that
- UAWD members are encouraged to vote for “Resolution to Protect UAW Members’ Right to Vote Directly in International Officer Elections” if it is brought forward in their Local, while highlighting its limitations as a narrow reform.
- UAWD members are encouraged to proactively bring the UAWD ConCon Program and Strategy to their Local, to develop our class struggle program of broader democratic member control over our union, including regarding strikes, layoffs, and presidential endorsements.
- The UAWD ConCon Strategy Committee shall bring proposed constitutional amendments it learns about that are consistent with the UAWD Member Platform to a UAWD membership meeting for consideration.
